On Namibia
I am walking as silently as possible behind my guide along the red rocky hills of Damaraland, not another soul in sight. We have been driving through an arid yet hauntingly beautiful landscape with vast vistas and had stopped in a dry riverbed to watch hyenas resting in the shade of a rocky overhang beside an old elephant carcass. We are now tracking the rare Black Desert Rhino. It feels like an impossible task in such open barren land. We reach the top of the hill and there on the other side under a lone Umbrella Thorntree is a mother rhino with the tiniest baby calf. Our guide tells us that she is newborn and I am given the honor to name her. It’s a moment etched in my heart forever.
